Statistics and Mathematics Department

The Department is an active and diverse unit. The department’s academic programmes lead to BSc Honours in a wide range of areas. The two main undergraduate programs are: Statistics and Financial Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. We also offer Post graduate Diploma in Financial Mathematics. The Department also plays a substantial and innovative role in bringing Mathematical Science to the community. The O’ and ‘A’ Level Mathematics Olympiad, data analytics and Applied Mathematics are the major activities.

The Department also provides teaching and research services to various departments across faculties in the university.

Highlights of Extension/Community Engagement

  • Continuous participation in the annual BUSE Olympiad (Statistics & Mathematics)
  • Providing data analytics short courses to industry such as bankers, NGO practitioners and other key stakeholders.
  • Provide training in statistical and mathematical packages such as SPSS, Minitab, Matlab, E-views and R.
  • The department has fostered external collaborations with the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Centre in developing STEM related programmes since November 2018.
