Conference Title: Harm Reduction, Treatment and Rehabilitation
Theme: Bridging Gaps in Harm Reduction, Treatment and Rehabilitation: Collaborative Actions for Lasting Change.
The Government of Zimbabwe through the National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse, in collaboration with Bindura University of Science Education and National Aids Council are pleased to invite researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and individuals with lived experience to submit abstracts for presentations at the Harm Reduction, Treatment and Rehabilitation Conference as we celebrate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. This pivotal conference aims to foster dialogue, share innovative strategies, and build collaborative actions to address the complex challenges of drug and substance use.
Under the overarching theme of Bridging Gaps in Harm Reduction, Treatment and Rehabilitation: Collaborative Actions for Lasting Change, we encourage submissions that explore, but are not limited to, the following areas:
- Innovative Harm Reduction Strategies: Exploring novel approaches to minimize the negative consequences associated with drug use, including but not limited to:
- Needle and syringe programs
- Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder
- Overdose prevention and naloxone distribution
- Drug checking services
- Safe consumption sites
- Digital harm reduction interventions
- Advancements in Addiction Treatment: Examining evidence-based and culturally sensitive treatment modalities across the spectrum of care, such as:
- Psychological therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing)
- Pharmacological interventions
- Integrated treatment for co-occurring disorders
- Telehealth and digital treatment platforms
- Trauma-informed care
- Addressing stigma within treatment settings and communities
- Strengthening Rehabilitation and Recovery Support: Investigating effective strategies for post-treatment support, reintegration, and long-term recovery, including:
- Sober housing and supportive living environments
- Peer support and mutual aid groups
- Vocational training and employment support
- Family involvement and support systems
- Addressing social determinants of health in recovery
- Relapse prevention strategies
- Drug use management at work places
- The Role of Collaboration and Partnerships: Highlighting the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration among healthcare providers, law enforcement, social services, community organizations, and individuals with lived experience to improve outcomes.
- Policy and Advocacy for Change: Discussing policy reforms and advocacy efforts aimed at promoting harm reduction, expanding access to treatment, and supporting recovery at local, national, and international levels.
- Addressing Specific Populations: Focusing on the unique needs and challenges faced by diverse populations affected by substance use, including youth, women, marginalized communities, and individuals involved in the criminal justice system.
- The Impact of Stigma and Discrimination: Exploring the pervasive effects of stigma on individuals who use drugs and advocating for destigmatizing language and approaches within service delivery and the broader community.
- Research and Evaluation Methodologies: Presenting rigorous research findings and innovative evaluation methods to inform evidence-based practice and policy.
Submission Guidelines:
Interested organisations and individuals are invited to submit abstracts of no more than 300 words, clearly outlining the objectives, methodology (if applicable), key findings, and implications of their work. Please include the following information with your submission:
- Presenter’s full name(s) and affiliation(s)
- Contact email address and phone number
- Preferred presentation format
- Thematic area(s) relevant to your abstract

Conference fees:
- USD $715 (full board)
- USD $355 (own accommodation)
- USD $300 (own accommodation and transport)
- USD $150 (virtual).
