Bindura University of Science Education’s (BUSE) National Sports Academy’s star continues to shine bright in global athletics as its athletes have grown in global renown in recent events.

Following the culmination of the local athletics season, Wayne Nkomo qualified for the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China.

Wayne is the reigning National Javelin Record Holder and she took to the games, representing the University and Nation, in the shot put and javelin events.

She qualified for the games after decimating her competition at the Federation of Africa University Sports (FASU) in Kenya.

Accompanied by FASU’s Executive Vice President and BUSE’s Sports and Recreation Director, Mrs Tsitsi Muzuva, Wayne carried the flag during the opening event, leading team Zimbabwe which had 2 other athletes competing.

Facing tough competition from all over the world, Wayne put up a commendable performance to finish the games 7th in shotput and 14th in javelin.

Speaking upon her return from China, Wayne said she was content with her performance and gleaned a lot of lessons from her experience.

“This competition was world-class in the way it was organized and run. I learned a lot and this surely helped me in preparing for international competitions such as the All-Africa Games and Olympics,” she said.

Mrs Muzuva was equally content with Wayne’s performance.

“She did really well against other athletes from around the world. As our FASU champion, she did not let us down,” said Mrs Muzuva.

Meanwhile, Academy Athlete Tapiwa Makarawu will face the world’s best in the 200m event at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungry. The World Athletics Championships will run from the 19th to the 27th of August.

Makarawu is one of four Zimbabweans who qualified for the games and he is the only track athlete while the other three are marathon runners. He is the National Record Holder for both the 200m indoor and outdoor records.

Like Wayne, Makarawu was recruited into the Academy by veteran coach Cuthbert Nyasango in 2019. The Academy is mandated to scout talent across Zimbabwe and train them into medal-winning athletes. To date, the academy has broken 4 national records and has become a consistent supplier of athletes for Zimbabwean teams competing in regional and international competitions.
