The Bindura University of Science Education’s 18th Graduation ceremony was an epic and historic event which saw the conferment of an honorary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) in Peace and Governance to the Chancellor and President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, His Excellency (HE) Cde E.D Mnangagwa by the university. The honorary doctorate degree was presented by the Vice Chancellor of BUSE, Professor E. Mwenje on 12th October 2019 at the Faculty of Science Education Complex.
In his acceptance speech, HE Cde Mnangagwa expressed his gratitude to the institution for honouring him in such a prestigious manner.
“I wish to express my deep sense of gratitude to the Bindura University of Science Education for the conferment of Honourary Doctorate (Honoris Causa) in Peace and Governance. I humbly dedicate this award to all Zimbabweans who have over the years remained committed to peace, security, unity and stability of our beloved country,” he said.
He added that BUSE had an urgent and imperative task at hand of fully exploiting and implementing its mandate.
“The ongoing thrust of the new Education 5.0 model must give impetus to this University to consolidate its position as a centre of excellence in science education. Indeed this institution has the weighty obligation to churn out educators who are the bedrock and foundation of our science, technology, engineering and innovation education revolution,” said HE Cde Mnangagwa.
HE Cde Mnangagwa challenged the University to correctly situate itself as a key contributor to the speedy attainment of the modernisation and industrialisation agenda as well as Vision 2030.
“It is through the graduates that come from here that our national skills, competencies and capabilities in sciences will be strengthened and enhanced,” he said urging BUSE to be reliable and consistent in the supply of educators to the nation.
In his concluding remarks, HE Cde Mnangagwa urged Zimbabweans and institutions of higher learning to be cradles of patriotism, peace and national unity.
“As I receive this prestigious award, I want to call on all of us to be united and to love our country. The building of a Zimbabwe we all want demands that we reignite our national pride, confidence, boldness and determination. In unity our success and prosperity is guaranteed,” he said. HE Cde Mnangagwa was congratulated by a number of people including the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Hon Professor dr A. Murwira; The Chairman of the BUSE Council, Mr TZ Sakala; BUSE staff representative, Dr C Muchemwa and a BUSE students’ representative, Miss A. Barara.
