Prof. Ronald Mandumbu – Department Chairperson
The Crop Science Department was established in 2012. Previously, Crop Science was a unit within the Agricultural Science Department. But at the beginning of 2012, three new departments were born out of the Agricultural Science Department i.e. Animal Science, Agricultural Economics, Education and Extension and Crop Science. Currently, the department has eight lecturers and has more than 80% of the students doing the Bachelor of Agricultural Science Honours Degree at Bindura University of Science Education.
Four year degree programmes in Horticultural Science and Crop Science are offered. Students can enroll either on block release or on full time basis. The programmes have a strong industrial attachment component, with the whole of the third year of study dedicated for this. Students carry out their research projects while on Industrial Attachment.
The department has strong links with industry with whom they cooperate in research and extension activities. There ia also a vibrant Advisory Board that keeps the department abreast with the requirements of industry and commerce. Associateship programmes are being run with Chaminuka College which is offering Diplomas in Agriculture and Horticulture. Plans are also at an advanced stage for an associateship with Fambidzanayi Permaculture Centre so that a Diploma in Permaculture is offered.
