The OFC then (5) detects changes in the value of those reinforcers, with the medial OFC involved in monitoring and decoding reward values, whereas the lateral OFC evaluates punishers and motivates behavior change. In an individual who can neither recognize the reward value of interpersonal stimuli nor sense how his or her behavior might be viewed negatively by others and thus be socially punished, and who cannot rapidly mobilize appropriate behaviors to acquire interpersonal rewards or avoid punishments, appropriate social behavior would quickly disintegrate.
